The majority of the region's 5 million people live in the towns and cities, yet these urban areas also sustain a surprising variety of wildlife.

As well as towns across the large rural areas of the region such as Scarborough and Harrogate, the larger conurbations of South and West Yorkshire, Hull and York have thriving populations of wildlife within important habitats such as standing open water and canals; rivers and streams; species-rich grasslands; hedgerows; fens and bogs; reedbeds; broadleaved woodland and even coastal saltmarsh.

The region's extensive waterways, in particular, accommodate UK Priority Species such as otters, water voles, white-clawed crayfish and bats, even in urban areas. Towns and cities also support a wide range of birds, butterflies, small mammals and amphibians in urban gardens, parks and landscaped areas and provide an important opportunity for people to get closer to wildlife. Brownfield sites especially can have high biodiversity value.

However, development has the potential to fragment habitats and wildlife corridors, having an adverse impact on the species which depend upon them. Therefore, the effect of development proposals on wildlife and opportunities for habitat creation must be considered at an early stage. The Lower Aire valley wetland project is currently being developed by the RSPB and Leeds City Council on the lower Aire, east of Leeds, is a good example of planning gain, transforming brownfield sites, floodplains and washlands into a regionally important site for wildlife.
